Debut European Le Mans Series pole for TF Sport at Silverstone
TF Sport got its new season off to a prefect start by claiming pole position this afternoon (14 April, 2017) as the European Le Mans Series got underway in anger at Silverstone.
The British-based team worked through a comprehensive programme in the two 90-minute practice sessions with Nicki Thiim, Salih Yoluc and Euan Hankey all taking turns at the wheel of the #90 Aston Martin V8 Vantage GTE. After topping the timesheets in the first session, the team were confident of a strong showing today.
Having recorded a 1:58.7 in first practice, Aston Martin works driver Thiim was charged with qualifying duties. Under leaden skies and with rain threatening, Thiim was immediately on the pace, his first lap proving to be the quickest on a 1:58.269, claiming pole position by two-tenths of a second.
“It was a really good lap, you just feel it in your gut as a racing driver,” said Thiim. “It a great feeling as a race driver with the new shiny tyres around this beautiful race circuit and to put it on pole at this home circuit for TF Sport and Aston Martin is fantastic.
“The team has taken this great challenge this year and the improvement and developments that they have done both here and in the Monza test is tremendous. The team spirit is high and this is a real boost and the season can now come.
“For the race, there’s so much that can happen, not to mention the traffic and I’m sure the weather will all be okay. So yes, the boys are doing a good job as are my teammates, so it will be a great race.”
